Jhonattan Vegas shanks ball, sends fan flying off chair at Tour Championship

Day wasn't the only top player to struggle in round two, FedExCup leader Jordan Spieth also unable to get anything going as he trod water with four birdies and four bogeys to remain 3-under. Holing that putt made this feel like a pretty good day after all.

Simpson, the 2012 U.S. Open champion, had to overcome a double-bogey at No. 13 after hooking his drive.

The US PGA Championship victor is projected to claim the FedEx Cup with his current standing this week.

Moving day is next at the Tour Championship, where Paul Casey and Webb Simpson share the lead with Player-of-the-Year favorite Justin Thomas at seven under.

Anybody who thinks the money on offer here at the FedEx Cup is already absurd should stick around. Patrick Reed and Justin Rose highlight a group of four golfers one-stroke off the lead at minus-six.

Top-seeded Justin Spieth followed his first-round 67 with a 70 and is tied for 16th.

"I don't know the scenarios, so it really doesn't make a difference for me to watch the scoreboard other than to figure out how to get to the leaders", he said.

Unable to make many putts, the reigning PGA Championship victor played his next 11 holes in even par and reached the 18th tee two shots off the lead.

"Today was very pleasing, I probably played better than I did yesterday though it was all going to plan playing tidy golf except for those blemishes on the card were from some sloppy stuff", said Casey. Simpson made par on the final five holes.

He spent most of the week trying to eliminate the right side of the golf course and thought he had that ironed out. Spieth missed four birdie chances inside 12 feet on the back nine.

"These results over the years, you're up against 29 other guys so it's...but it's stills strong", he said.

"I've had a very good season to this point but I would like to turn it into a great one - and the way to do it would be with victory this week".
