Russian hackers tried to access Washington state's voting systems, officials say

On Friday the Associated Press spoke to election officials in 21 states who said hackers had tried to hack into their voting systems during the 2016 race.

Secretary of State Kim Wyman said in a statement that the Department of Homeland security informed her office Friday of the attempted breach, of which state officials had already been aware.

Early this summer, DHS officials announced that 21 states' elections systems were targeted during the election, but did it not name the states.

CT officials have been notified by the federal government that the state's online voter registration system was targeted in hacking efforts by Russian Federation previous year.

Wisconsin Elections Commission administrator Michael Haas said the attempted hack had no effect on Wisconsin's systems or the outcome of the election.

"Our IT system has a firewall and when the scan came through, it recognized what was happening and stopped it from entering the system", he said. Trump also won Pennsylvania, becoming the first Republican presidential candidate to do so since 1988.

Homeland Security told Wisconsin that the Russian government "scanned internet-connected election infrastructure likely seeking specific vulnerabilities such as access to voter registration databases, but the attempt to exploit vulnerabilities was unsuccessful", he said. One local security breach where a key password is divulged could cause problems statewide, Haas said. Walker is expected to seek a third term and Democratic U.S. Sen.
