USA to extend Iran sanctions relief under nuclear deal

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley visited the IAEA and met with Amano last month, a visit in which she praised the IAEA's works but also "discussed U.S. concerns about ensuring Iran strictly adheres to its obligations, noting that IAEA reports can only be as good as the access Iran grants to any facility the IAEA suspects of having a nuclear role".

The agreement among six world powers - Russia, China, France, Germany, Britain and the U.S. - and Iran was supported by former U.S. President Barack Obama.

In a recent talk with ICANA, Ali Bakhtiar added that the nuclear deal, officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, is regarded as global law as it has been endorsed by the United Nations Security Council.

Abandoning the deal, these experts warn, "would decrease the time it would take for Iran to obtain enough nuclear material for a warhead" and "increase the likelihood of wider conflict in the Middle East and could trigger a destabilizing nuclear competition in region".

The United States on Thursday extended some sanctions relief for Iran under the 2015 nuclear deal, the State Department said, but no decision has been made on whether to preserve the deal itself.

Johnson said there are two sides to the deal: The Islamic Republic behaving itself, and the USA and the others ensuring Iran enjoys economic benefits. Trump even indicated he would be over-ruling Tillerson if he de-certified Iranian compliance in July interview with The Wall Street Journal.

"Western companies ought not be allowed to sell Iranian airliners more aircraft that they can use to fuel Assad's brutal war", Roskam said during House floor debate. Those, however, aren't specifically covered in the nuclear agreement. If the president doesn't certify compliance, Congress has 60 days to decide whether to re-impose sanctions lifted under the agreement.

Tillerson isn't the only administration official exploring ways to finesse certifying the Iran deal. The agreement saw Iran sharply curtail its nuclear program and allow extensive inspections in return for the lifting of worldwide sanctions.

Haley stopped short, though, of saying the administration was poised to walk away from the deal.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has verified that Iran has implemented its key nuclear-related measures described in the JCPOA, and the Secretary State has confirmed the IAEA's verification.

One entity engaging in activities in support of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) ballistic missile program.

He also noted that the United Nations nuclear agency has already verified there has been no undeclared nuclear activities in Iran.

The IAEA inspectors are charged with ensuring that no potential nuclear fuel - highly enriched uranium and plutonium are the two commonly used sources - is being diverted to a covert nuclear weapons program.

In another, the White House elaborated.
