4 children killed in day care blaze set by security guard

The former security guard was seen carrying a pink backpack where he allegedly carried flammable liquid, possibly alcohol or gasoline, which he then used to set the victims and himself on fire. He died in hospital of his wounds.

Six children and a teacher have died after a security guard at their nursery school sprayed them with alcohol and set them on fire, said emergency services. The firefighter said a teacher also died in the fire.

The office of Janauba's mayor decreed seven days of mourning.

Around 50 people were injured in the incident where they were admitted to the local hospital. With only 2 hospitals in the small town of 80,000 people, numerous more seriously hurt were taken by police helicopter to Minas Gerais' capital Belo Horizonte, more than 500 kilometers away.

The dead children were aged four, the G1 news website reported. The motive of the attack was unclear.

But police superintendent Renato Nunes told the website of the Hoje em Dia newspaper that the guard had mental health problems since 2014.

Witnesses told media that the man, in his 50s, had been working as a night guard at the nursery for eight years.

"This could have been worse because the babies' room was in the hall next door". As many as twenty children were taken to area hospitals for burns and smoke inhalation, according to officials.

Brazilian President Michel Temer expressed his sympathies via Twitter.

As the father of, Temer said he understood "this must be an extremely painful loss" for the parents.
