Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) Makes Prime Even More Affordable For Students

Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) Makes Prime Even More Affordable For Students

Amazon is targeting a new segment of shoppers - teenagers. Parents will be allowed to approve all orders and set pre-approved spending limits per order.

The new move could be a seen simply as a bid to give teenagers more freedom.

"As a parent of a teen, I know how they crave independence, but at the same time that has to be balanced with the convenience and trust that parents need", said Michael Carr, vice president of Amazon Households, in a statement.

Order approvals are switched on by default, so if a parent wants to allow a teen to shop Amazon without each item being reviewed they'll have to explicitly disable this feature.

Afterwards, the teen will log into the Amazon App using their own username and password. Parents are able to select which payment methods and shipping addresses they'd like their teens to have access to and will receive an automated request for approval whenever a purchase is attempted. Though many college students may come from households that share a Prime Membership, the option for a reduced-price Prime Student membership could be an attractive one for students living on their own.

There are multiple ways parents can set limits on how their teens shop on Amazon.

Parents who aren't pleased with their child's purchase have up to 30 minutes to cancel an order, according to an Amazon spokeswoman.

This codifies a process that was already taking place unofficially: For as long as it's been possible to buy things online, kids have logged into their parents' accounts to do so. To get started, parents can visit amazon.com/forteens or sign up via a text or email invitation from their teens.
