Charlottesville magistrate issues warrant for black victim of parking garage beating

Police in Charlottesville, Virginia, have issued a warrant charging a black man beaten at a white nationalist rally for an alleged assault during the confrontation.

A warrant has been issued for Deandre Shakur Harris in relation to an assault that occurred near the Market Street Parking Garage during the chaos caused by the violent white nationalist Unite the Right rally on August 12.

A Charlottesville police detective verified the victim's story, and a warrant for unlawful wounding was issued. Two men were later identified from the video and both charged with a felony of malicious wounding. According to a post on Roberts' social media dates October 9, he has yet to be "interviewed by Charlottesville police department or the FBI" regarding the brutal beating that he witnessed Harris take by the group of white supremacist.

"We find it highly offensive and upsetting, but what's more jarring is that he's been charged with the same crime as the men who attacked him", Merritt told The Washington Post.

According to reports, it is unusual for a warrant to be rendered by magistrates instead of the police themselves. Harris was seen bloodied in viral photos and a video after being attacked during the rally in August.

WVIR reports that the the Charlottesville Police Department explained that the accuser went to the magistrate's office in person to discuss what happened the day of the attack. The warrant against Harris stems from accusations that he attacked someone, which led to the beating inside the garage.

Harris was one of a dozen people injured during the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, where white supremacists gathered to protest the proposed removal of statue honoring Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

Merritt is adamant that his client was not the antagonist in the incident and noted that Harris has plans to turn himself in to the police in the days to come. Harris suffered a concussion and a head laceration that required 10 staples.
