The main selling point of Microsoft Edge is its self-explanatory "Continue on PC" feature which requires you to have the Windows 10 Fall Creators update installed on your computer. On the Windows Home and Pro versions there's no way to completely turn-off the telemetry system. "That results in an intrusive profile of yourself", said DPA's vice-chairman, Wilbert Tomesen.

Although collection of data is a generally unpopular practice from a consumer standpoint, Microsoft does have valid uses and benefits from collecting extensive metadata.

In contrast, the Edge Browser's beta is not yet open to all on Android but Microsoft has opened up its iOS beta testing to all users. Further, the agency claims that Microsoft makes it very hard for the users to approve their personal data for processing. "They are not informed which data are being used for what goal, neither that based on these data, personalized advertisements and recommendations can be presented, if those users have not opted out from these default settings on installation or afterwards".

Data Sync: Your favorites and reading list are synced across your devices, so no matter the device, your browser is always personalized to you. If this is not the case, the Dutch DPA can decide to impose a sanction on Microsoft. The collection of the full telemetry data is thus more unpredictable. Microsoft Edge will pull up the reading and information right onto your screen.

According to the Dutch authority, the full telemetry option is enabled by default at Windows 10 installation and users are only asked to accept the offered setting. Full telemetry, meanwhile, sends detailed data on app usage and browsing histories through Microsoft Edge.

On Friday, DPA said that they conducted a thorough investigation of Microsoft Windows 10 Home and Pro operating systems, and found that the users are not clearly informed "about the type of data it uses, and for which goal". Additionally, the Dutch DPA has established that Microsoft has not respected existing privacy choices from some users when they upgraded to the Creators Update.

Replying to the concerns raised by the Dutch agency, Microsoft said it is working to comply with the Dutch data protection law.

This is the hottest attempt by the Redmont-based company to bump up its presence across the smartphone platform- by offering its apps to Android and iOS users when Windows Phone is officially dead.
