PM Modi calls for debate on internal democracy in parties

The Prime Minister lauded the "great contribution" of media in the success of Swachchh Bharat Abhiyan.

He also said that media must play a constructive role in democracy and even stressed upon the importance of democracy stating that political parties must discuss democracy. "It is also because the size of the party has grown, making it hard to train, communicate and so on", Modi said. "I believe that the development of a true democratic spirit within political parties is necessary not only for the the country's future but also for democracy", he said. But overall, the debate in the media must also focus on how they are formed, how they function, how they recruit and develop leadership and foster their values and ideologies. "It should become an issue of our debate and deeply so", Modi said in his address to the media at the BJP's annual Diwali Milan here.

Modi's call was apparently against the backdrop of the likely elevation of Rahul Gandhi as the Congress president next month and in line with the BJP's sustained attack on the dynastic rule and "lack of internal democracy" in the main Opposition party. He hoped media would aid in the process while also expressing the need for transparency in political funding. "Half of the newspaper pages would be filled with the government's criticism".

A large number of media persons from print, audio-visual and digital media were present at the event. That was the time when I wanted to speak to you but could not find you.

"Now there are so many mediums".

The function was attended by Union ministers Smriti Irani, Nirmala Sitharaman, Jitendra Singh, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, BJP president Amit Shah, senior leaders Sambit Patra, Shahnawaz Hussain, Anil Baluni, etc. "There are occasions when things may get distorted but a lot of feedback comes, which is useful for us", the prime minister said.

The media has joined the scheme in "mission mode", he said, adding that the country has still a long way to go to achieve global standards of cleanliness but the campaign has built an atmosphere its its favour.
