Supreme Court bans sale of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR till November 1

In November past year, the court had stopped the sale of fireworks within the National Capital Region, which includes Delhi and nearby areas, following a petition flagging the alarming rise in pollution levels after Diwali. It has brought back the November 2016 ban on the sale of firecrackers in the Delhi-NCR region.

Later, on 12th September, the apex court had temporarily lifted its earlier order and permitted sale of firecrackers. For around a week after Diwali past year, the region had become a kind of gas chamber because of the burning of crackers in Delhi-NCR and stubble burning in nearby states, forcing the closure of schools.

In 2016, post-Diwali pollution levels were so high that many air quality instruments could not even measure them. According to a PTI report, SAFAR, a central government agency which monitors air pollution said that the situation was poor and forecasted that it was going to deteriorate.

However, an empirical study by IIT-Kanpur, in possession of The Pioneer, shows the SC was misled into ordering ban on firecrackers ahead of Diwali.

The US embassy data shows air quality level in Delhi has already reached unhealthy levels.

Activists fear people will smuggle fireworks from neighbouring states.

Diwali festivities leave the city and adjacent areas engulfed by a toxic cloud of smoke and hazardous levels of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) that pose the greatest threat to lungs.

A 2014 World Health OrganiSation survey of more than 1,600 cities ranked Delhi as the most polluted. "The honorable Court will hopefully also define the dimensions of the sweet so that there is no cheating", Mr. BBC added.

Others reminded him of the high incidence of respiratory diseases among Delhi's young where many children are born with asthma caused by the pollutants in the air. The ban was imposed in 2016 previous year and was lifted temporarily around 20 days back.

Soon enough, the yearly pro-Diwali arguments and whataboutery split the social media users over the Supreme Court diktat.
