Trump wanted tenfold increase in nuclear weapons, says network

NBC had earlier posted a story alleging the president told a meeting of national security leaders in July that he wanted "what amounted to a almost tenfold increase in the USA nuclear arsenal".

After being shown an image charting the steadily falling size of the US nuclear arsenal since the height of the Cold War during a meeting with top national security officials in July, President Donald Trump reportedly expressed support for a tenfold expansion of America's stockpile of nukes-a move critics said would spark a "global arms race" and dramatically increase the threat of a nuclear catastrophe.

On Wednesday afternoon, Trump said: "It is frankly disgusting the press is able to write whatever it wants to write".

Trump has voiced inconsistent opinions on the nuclear arsenal, at one point expressing a desire to "greatly strengthen and expand [US] nuclear capability" and in other instances insisting he does not think the arsenal should grow in size.

"It seems to me he's reaching for excuses, reaching for ways to punish the media for stories he doesn't like", he stated.

In remarks in the Oval Office on Wednesday, Trump denounced the NBC report and said such a big increase was "totally unnecessary".

"Fake [NBC News] made up a story that I wanted a "tenfold" increase in our U.S. nuclear arsenal". "They have their sources that don't exist, in my opinion they don't exist". The president has regularly complained about news coverage he believes is unfairly critical by labeling the stories, news outlets and even reporters as "fake news". "Bad for country!" he tweeted.

In his tweet earlier in the day Trump raised the possibility of the broadcast licenses of NBC and other networks being challenged.

According to the report, Trump asked for "what amounted to a almost tenfold increase" after being presented with a graph that showed a gradual reduction in nuclear weapons since the 1960s.

Officials told NBC that they were surprised to hear Trump focus on enlarging America's nuclear weapons footprint.

Tillerson said during a visit to Beijing two weeks ago that the administration was "probing" for channels of direct communication with Pyongyang to ratchet down tensions, but Trump quickly undercut the nation's top diplomat, saying on Twitter that it was a waste of time.

"In suggesting that a broadcast network's license be targeted because of its coverage, Mr. Trump once again evoked the Watergate era when President Richard M. Nixon told advisers to make it hard for The Washington Post to renew the FCC license for a Florida television station it owned", The New York Times said in its report on the tweet.

During an address to the United Nations General Assembly in September, Mr Trump declared that the U.S. would "totally destroy North Korea" if forced to defend itself or its allies.
