Trump's Chief of Staff's Cellphone Was Hacked

The personal cellphone belonging to White House chief of staff John Kelly was hacked and may have been compromised for several month, Politico reported. Kelly, who was appointed Chief of Staff in July, was previously the head of the Department of Homeland Security.

Politico reports that Kelly waited months before reporting problems with his phone, including the fact that it wasn't applying software updates.

IT staff inspected the phone for days before determining that it had been compromised.

The revelation about Kelly's phone being compromised comes as a shock, though he is not the only person in the administration to use a potentially at-risk device.

Kelly said at the time that his personal phone hadn't been working properly for months - a tell-tale sign that it may have been hijacked by malware that gave outsiders access to the device's secrets.

An official in the Trump administration told Politico Kelly didn't frequently use his personal phone, relying primarily on a government-issued one, and has since switched to a new personal device.

The White House said Kelly's phone stopped working past year and that he has since stopped using it, although officials did not specify when use of the device ended.

Sam Kassoumeh, the CEO of SecurityScorecard, a security intelligence company, said that Android phones can carry the risk of being vulnerable to hackers, according to Wired. And staffers did indeed find many functions on the phone were't working.

Advisers Stephen Miller and Gary Cohn, as well as former officials Reince Priebus and Steve Bannon, were also reported to have used their personal email accounts for government correspondence.
