U.S. pressure behind delay in vote for 'Greater Jerusalem Bill'

U.S. pressure behind delay in vote for 'Greater Jerusalem Bill'

The law stops short of annexing West Bank territory to Israel, and its practical implications are unclear.

But the Israeli official said on condition of anonymity that the bill needs "diplomatic preparation", declining to elaborate further.

The statement came hours after coalition chairman David Bitan (Likud) told Army Radio a vote on the "Greater Jerusalem" bill in the key Ministerial Committee for Legislation on Sunday was delayed because "there is American pressure claiming this is annexation". But in the occupied West Bank, anger is continuing over illegal Israeli settlements. "The Jerusalem expansion bill was considered by the administration to be one of those actions".

In this Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012 file photo, a Jewish settler looks at the West Bank settlement of Ma'ale Adumim, from the E-1 area on the eastern outskirts of Jerusalem.

"The Americans turned to us and inquired what the bill was about. As we have been co-ordinating with them until now, it is worth continuing to talk and co-ordinate with them".

'Mr Turnbull's too arrogant for that and because of his arrogance and his poor judgment, we've now got the current turmoil, ' Mr Shorten told reporters in Jerusalem on Sunday night.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull checked into the King David Hotel in Jerusalem at 2 p.m. on Monday, just less than two days later than he originally intended, and nearly immediately entered into discussions with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"I enjoyed the opportunity to have a wide-ranging conversation with Prime Minister Netanyahu about some of the serious issues facing his country, as well as focus on ways to bolster the strong relationship that already exists between Wisconsin and Israel", Governor Walker said.

Israel's claim to all of Jerusalem as its capital, including the eastern sector it captured along with the West Bank and Gaza Strip in a 1967 Middle East war, has not won global recognition. Israel disputes that its settlements are illegal, citing historical, biblical and political links to the territory, as well as security considerations.

The global community is widely opposed to settlement construction.
