Apple delays release of smart speaker - HomePod

It was scheduled to ship in December, Apple said at the time.

A prototype of Apple's HomePod displayed during the 2017 Apple Worldwide Developer Conference in June.

AI Assistants are more used in smart speakers than phones. Amazon invented the category in 2015 with the Echo, and there are now similar options available from Google, Microsoft and Sonos.

The HomePod is Apple's first attempt at the Amazon and Google-dominated smart speaker market.

"We can't wait for people to experience HomePod, Apple's breakthrough wireless speaker for the home, but we need a little more time before it's ready for our customers", Apple said in a statement. "We'll start shipping in the US, UK and Australia in early 2018", Apple said in a statement, but the company did not provide a more specific explanation on why the device will be delayed.

People use voice assistants more often on smart speakers than on phones, so even if owners of Amazon or Google speakers also have an iPhone, there's a good chance that they're talking to Alexa or Google Assistant as much or more than Siri. They can play music, spit out trivia, manage shopping lists and put things on your calendar.

The former get sound flowing throughout the room; the later detect voice commands starting with "Hey Siri" to perform tasks ranging from playing music to driving HomeKit-compatible devices such as Philips Hue LED lighting.

The device itself will measure around seven-inches (just under 18cm) tall, and Apple has defended its dustbin-like design by burbling on about its "seamless 3D mesh fabric" as having acoustic properties. Although developers can make apps for Siri and HomePod, they're now limited to building things like lists, notes, and messaging.

Apple is also counting on HomePod to boost subscriptions to Apple Music and block the rise of rival Spotify. You can stream other services to it from a smartphone, but not with Siri.

Every company is aware of the holiday rush and its importance for increasing sales. But now it seems that Apple wants to make a product solid enough before users pay $349 for it.
