DC Comics Editor Fired Following Sexual Assault Claims

DC Entertainment has suspended Group Editor Eddie Berganza after new sexual assault allegations against the long-time employee came to light in a Buzzfeed article.

"We are committed to eradicating harassment", DC Comics said in a statement, "and ensuring that all employees, as well as our freelance community, are aware of our policies, are comfortable reporting any concerns and feel supported by our company". DC promoted Berganza anyway and later demoted-but retained-him after another incident at WonderCon in 2012 in which Berganza reportedly shoved his tongue into a woman's mouth in a hotel lobby surrounded by multiple witnesses. On Monday, the company announced that Berganza's employment at DC Entertainment has been terminated.

One day after Berganza's suspension was made public, DC chose to fire him, telling Buzzfeed that the company was "committed to eradicating harassment". The article alleged that Berganza had been engaging in the behavior for years but rose through the comic book publisher's ranks despite his alleged actions. Rumors of harassment had long followed Berganza.

One of the women, Liz Gehrlein Marsham, claimed that Berganza, a top editor at DC Comics who oversaw properties including Superman and Wonder Woman, forcibly kissed her at a bar in December 2006, when she had worked for the company for less than three weeks. Instead of being investigated, or fired, Berganaza was named executive editor later that same year.

Cartoonist and editor Joan Hilty told BuzzFeed that at a staff party in the early 2000s, Berganza repeatedly and forcibly tried to kiss her, even after she told him no. In the end, DC Comics made the right decision, but many are asking why this didn't happen sooner. But for the victims, as well as the larger crowd of women who are noted to have avoided work at DC because of the well-known threat of Berganza, this will hopefully be a fresh start.

In response to this news DC said in a statement: 'DC and Warner Bros are unequivocally committed to cultivating a work environment of dignity and respect, one that is safe and harassment free for all employees'.

After the accusations were published, DC Comics confirmed that Berganza had been suspended pending a review of the charges.
