Dead, 150 Injured After Violent Clashes Between Forces And Islamist Protesters

Protests also broke out in Lahore and Karachi, as well as smaller towns.

Dozens were arrested. Over 8,000 security personnel engaged in the operation against around 2,000 protesters, a report said.

Pakistan Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal had given protesters around Islamabad until last Thursday to disperse, but they continued their demonstration.

The protesters are demanding the resignation of federal law minister Zahid Hamid over a hastily abandoned amendment to the oath that election candidates must swear.

Six people were killed and 200, mostly police, were injured as police tried to clear the intersection linking the Pakistani capital with the garrison city of Rawalpindi, doctors at local hospitals said.

Video from the scene Saturday showed law enforcement forces carrying sticks and firing tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters.

PEMRA directed news channels to ensure the security of their staff while the situation persisted; in light of which, Geo News as per its tradition of responsible reporting was and continues to abide by the rules.

So far one police official was martyred in I-8 Sector during the clashes while almost 200 persons of both sides had been injured.

Private TV stations were ordered off the air, with only state-run television broadcasting.

Liaquat Kazmi, 30, was standing outside his home near the Faizabad interchange, where the protest is centred, when he was manhandled and beaten by police as the crackdown got under way. The media blackout was followed by suspension of services of popular social networking sites - Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Protesters want Hamid to resign over the matter.

The Islamabad High Court's scolding came one day after the Supreme Court also rejected the government's claim that using force on the protesters could result in injuries and deaths which would foment further unrest in the country.

"Patients dying for want of access to hospitals, traders crying for lack of business activity, students are being deprived from their right to education and [the] right of free movement of nearly six million people of [the] twin cities [is being] usurped", he said.

"The administration is taking action under court order but still we are open for talks with them", he said, referring to the protesters. Dr. Mohammad Altaf Hussain, at Islamabad's main hospital, said 186 people were brought from the rally with minor injuries and respiratory problems.

Where else would PROTESTERS fire teargas shells on SECURITY FORCES?
