Former Facebook Executive Says Social Media Exploits Human 'Vulnerability'

Although Facebook is a social networking site, it also has huge impact as an advertising platform and news distributor, reaching 2 billion people each month.

But Parker was unaware of the consequences of their social network which would burst into a community of 2 billion users and change the society in ways we can't imagine.

"God only knows what it's doing to our children's brains", Parker said.

"It's a social-validation feedback loop. exactly the kind of thing that a hacker like myself would come up with, because you're exploiting a vulnerability in human psychology", said Parker, further adding that people like him, Zuckerberg and Kevin Systrom (Instagram founder) understood this and exploited it to their benefit. "And we did it anyway", he said, according to a transcript of the interview.

With each like and comment, Facebook is "exploiting" human psychology on goal to keep users hooked on a "social-validation feedback loop", Parker said, adding that it is "exactly the kind of thing that a hacker like myself would come up with".

That vulnerability and dopamine hit in turn motivates people to post more often, which generates more page views for Facebook and, therefore, more ad revenue.

Parker said that he never anticipated the consequences of what would happen when Facebook grew to have two billion monthly users.

"When Facebook was getting going, I had these people who would come up to me and they would say, 'I'm not on social media, '" Parker told Axios.

Mr Parker became Facebook's first president after making hundreds of millions of dollars from the music-sharing service Napster. The comments are a little ironic given the billions Parker has made from being an early investor in Facebook.

"It literally changes your relationship with society, with each other", he said in an interview published Wednesday night by Axios. Now the founder and chair of the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy, Parker was there to speak about advances in cancer therapies. "I value presence. I value intimacy.' And I would say...'We'll get you eventually'".

In a blog post, Facebook's chief security officer Alex Stamos wrote that "we will continue to invest in our people and technology to help provide a safe place for civic discourse and meaningful connections on Facebook". He told this to people who were on social media and preferred real-life interactions.
