Launch of Idaho's first satellite postponed

Launch of Idaho's first satellite postponed

After billions of dollars in cost overruns and delays, NASA is planning to launch one of the most important weather satellites ever early Tuesday morning.

JPSS is a system of polar-orbiting satellites to be developed by NASA for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for weather forecasting, storm tracking and climate monitoring.

JPSS-1, which will be known as NOAA-20 when it reaches polar orbit, will join the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP), a joint NOAA-NASA weather satellite, giving the USA the benefit of two, sophisticated polar satellites in the same orbit.

With JPSS-1, the threat of a "satellite gap" due to aging satellite fleet should be allayed. The Launch Configuration Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) measures the electromagnetic emissions and subjects it to expected electromagnetic radiation that the satellite would experience at the launch site.

The JPSS-1 spacecraft was built by Ball Aerospace in Boulder, Colo. The first stage of the Delta II rocket arrived at Vandenberg's NASA Hangar 836 on April 4, 2016.

Given the very short 66-second launch window, there wasn't enough time to work and solve the problems, so there was no other option but to scrub the launch and reset with a twenty-four hour recycle.

The new satellite will be the most advanced polar-orbiting weather platform the USA has yet put to use, NOAA officials said, since it will carry upgraded instruments able to gather more weather information than ever before. It will be mounted atop the first stage of the rocket, seen on the left, as preparations continue for the launch of the Joint Polar Satellite System-1, or JPSS-1.

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) will build and deliver the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) for the Joint Polar Satellite Systems (JPSS) under a contract with NASA.

NASA-TV will cover the launch live and can be viewed at www.nasa.gov/ntv, starting at 1:15 a.m. PST on November 10.

Polar satellites like the JPSS-1, which orbit the globe from pole-to-pole 14 times a day, are considered the backbone of the global observing system.
