Lions survive a scare, come back to beat Browns

Kizer Strong - DeShone Kizer had the kind of day Hue Jackson had envisioned until he got blasted late in the third quarter and had to leave the game for a few offensive series.

According to the CBS broadcast, the rookie had his ribs injured.

The Lions forced a fumble after a completed pass and fourth-year cornerback Nevin Lawson returned the turnover 44 yards for a touchdown, which gave them a 17-10 lead over the Browns with 3:55 to play in the first half. The 21 passes and 232 yards were both the second best totals of Kizer's career, trailing only a game against the Indianapolis Colts when he was 22-for-47 with 242 yards passing. The interception was his first.

The Browns ended up losing 38-24 for their ninth consecutive loss this season. Receiver Kenny Britt caught a short pass, slipped past Lawson and scored on the 19-yard play.

They rushed for 201 yards and 6.1 yards per carry against a Detroit defense that came into the game giving up just 3.6 yards per carry. With plenty of time on the clock, the backup quarterback in the huddle, and a dominant run game, the opportunity was there for the Browns to grind out a nice game-tying drive.

The Lions pulled away in the end - and they've been a good closing team - but against better teams they can't look like they did in the first half against the Browns. Then, after a 29-yard punt return after a three-and-out from the Browns, Stafford found Tate for a 40-yard touchdown, which gave the Lions a two-score advantage.

What it means: In the end, this is another win for the Lions, pushing them over.500 on the season (5-4) and keeping them in the playoff hunt.

The Browns drove 85 yards following the second-half kickoff to tie the game at 17. That was a dumb play call that will overshadow the fact that Cleveland played better today than it has for most of the season.
