Man Arrested After Nine "Dismembered Bodies" Found in his Tokyo Apartment

Man Arrested After Nine

A Japanese man police say confessed to killing and dismembering nine bodies found in his apartment, was handed over to prosecutors for questioning on Wednesday as more details emerged.

Investigators found what they believe are the bodies of nine people, in cool boxes while searching for a missing 23-year-old woman, a police spokesman said.

The 27-year-old Takahiro Shiraishi, who lives in the apartment in Zama, south of Tokyo was detained by the law enforcers after they were left awe-struck about the incident.

A police official said a toolbox and saw found in Shiraishi's apartment may have been used to dismember the bodies. Police believe she was one of Shiraishi's victims. Shiraishi allegedly told police he dismembered his victims in his bathroom before discarding some body parts in the garbage, the Kyodo News agency reports.

This woman had earlier tweeted "I'm looking for someone to die with me", according to the Sankei Shimbun daily.

The AP reports that the missing woman met Shiraishi over a website for people with suicidal feelings.

Shiraishi's case, involving social media suicide pacts, connections to Tokyo's notorious red-light district and neighbours who did not report a noxious smell coming from the suspect's apartment for months, has the hallmarks of a grotesque thriller novel or horror movie.

While Japan prides itself on its low crime rate, it is no stranger to high-profile violent crimes. The brother later learned of the suicide site after logging in using her name and password, and found she had been in touch with the suspect. Police suspect that one of the bodies may belong to the missing 23-year-old woman.

Another told the newspaper he had seen Shiraishi several times late at night.

Shiraishi remains under arrest on suspicion of attempting to dispose of the bodies, a charge usually brought by the Japanese authorities while they gather sufficient evidence to lodge a murder charge.

"I thought it smelled like sewage", the neighbor said.
