The BSE market breadth was bearish - 1,805 declines and 949 advances.

At 10.15 AM: Markets traded flat during early morning trade on Wednesday. "Selling in metals, auto, banks and telecom shares dragged down the indices", Deepak Jasani, Head - Retail Research, HDFC Securities, said.

European markets were little changed in lackluster trade as mixed earnings results, falling bond yields on worries over possible delays to Donald Trump's tax reform plan and rising geopolitical tensions between Riyadh and Tehran kept investors on tenterhooks.

Key indices in Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, China, Singapore and Taiwan ended higher by 0.50 per cent to 1.73 per cent.

According to Dhruv Desai, director and chief operating officer of Tradebulls, shares of some household appliances companies rallied by up to 13 per cent on the BSE in the otherwise range-bound market after reporting strong set of numbers in the September quarter. Both the indices slipped nearly half a per cent.

Sector-wise, the S&P BSE healthcare index plunged by 510.98 points, followed by consumer durables index by 410.99 points and banking index by 366.04 points.

Barring Nifty IT (up 0.66 per cent), Nifty Pharma (up 0.27 per cent) and Nifty Media (up 0.14 per cent), all other sectoral indices ended the day with losses upto 2 per cent.

Foreign institutional investors bought equities worth Rs 461.47 crore yesterday, as per the provisional data.

However, Wednesday, FIIs turned net sellers and sold scrips worth Rs 3,838.27 crore.

Biggest losers in the 30-share index were Bharti Airtel (3.73%), Tata Motors (2.92%), State Bank Of India (2.35%), Lupin (2.09%), ICICI Bank (2.05%) and Reliance Industries (2.03%).

Major Sensex gainers on day were: Infosys, up 2.92 per cent at Rs 955.70; Tata Consultancy Services, up 1.55 per cent at Rs 2,708.35; Wipro, up 0.87 per cent at Rs 302.10; Kotak Bank, up 0.36 per cent at Rs 1,012.30; and ITC, up 0.32 per cent at Rs 265.65.
