StarCraft II Will Be Free to Play Starting Nov. 14

StarCraft II Will Be Free to Play Starting Nov. 14

Starcraft II's Wings of Liberty Campaign will be available in its entirety for free alongside the complete unranked & AI multiplayer suites Blizzard announced today during their Blizzcon keynote. If you already own Wings of Liberty, the second installment Heart of the Swarm will be available for free.

Blizzard also revealed a new StarCraft II co-op commander, which is actually two commanders in one.

StarCraft 2 itself is a sci-fi space opera about three warring races facing an intergalactic threat, played as a real-time strategy game.

Wings of Liberty, for the uninitiated, takes place four years after the events chronicled in the original StarCraft. Select commanders will also be free.

The free version of the game offers Wings of Liberty single-player campaign for free of cost.

Those who already own the main game will be gifted the Heart of the Swarm expansion. Just be sure to log in sometime between November 8 and December 8 to claim it.

Not too long ago, some Battle.net owners received free copies of Starcraft 2 for seemingly no reason, but most gamers weren't among the lucky few who got these copies. Co-op mode will be immediately accessible, though only Raynor, Kerrigan, and Artanis will be unlocked for free; all the other commanders will still require purchases to upgrade past level 5. This is good thinking, because if people can easily sign up for a free game, cheating and / or trolling is an inevitability (we're watching you, Google engineers!).

Once the change goes into effect, the vast majority of StarCraft II's original release will be entirely free-to-play for everyone. For everyone else, the Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void campaigns will be available to purchase for just $15 each. Well according to an interview with Gamespot, a Blizzard PR rep says they'll be offering a digital reward, " I think they're calling it the founder's gift.
