Bussels loses and England gains Euro 2020

UEFA has confirmed that all Group D games of the 2020 European Football Championship will be played in London and Glasgow, meaning that Wembley Stadium was given an additional four matches besides the semifinals and final.

UEFA made a decision to reallocate the three group-stage games and one round-of-16 game originally given to the Belgian capital because of delays in the project to build a new 60,000-capacity Eurostadium on the site of Heysel.

Both Wales' Principality Stadium and Sweden's Stockholm Friend's Arena had been hoping to replace Brussels, but UEFA opted against the venues for last season's Champions League and Europa League finals.

Tournament organisers UEFA announced on Thursday that Wembley will stage four more games than previously planned in the tournament which will be played in major cities across Europe.

UEFA selected Rome's Stadio Olimpico to be the venue for the opening game of the 24-team tournament, despite interest from Glasgow's Hampden Park. "Today we don't know if they can build a stadium or not", he told reporters at UEFA headquarters in Nyon.

Here's where the group-stage matches will be played.

Ceferin said the decision followed the Eurostadium project's failure to meet the conditions imposed by the UEFA executive committee in September 2017. The Welsh football association was "extremely disappointed", saying it may have been their only chance ever to host a Euro or World Cup final.

Each of the 12 host cities have been paired together in six groups of two and it also means a trip to Spain could be on the cards for travelling Irish fans.

"This has been a collective and collaborative process and we could not have done it without the support of the Government and the Mayor of London".

Should they qualify, the Republic of Ireland will be in Group E of the tournament.
