Collapse of rebel alliance leads to 'street war' in Yemeni capital

The Saudi-led coalition on Saturday welcomed Saleh's offer of talks, a move the Huthi-run Al Masirah TV said showed the coalition's "faith" that the former president would reverse alliances.

Footage on social media appeared to show the former leader's body wrapped in a blanket with a large wound on the side of his head.

However, Saleh's party said the ex-president had been killed outside Sanaa. The Houthis' Interior Ministry said Saleh was killed by rebels from the Shiite group.

The fighting that led to Saleh's death also apparently allowed the Houthis gain control of the majority of Yemen's capital Sanaa.

Media outlets Al-Arabiya and Reuters cited unnamed sources from Saleh's political party, the General People's Congress, as confirming that he was killed on December 4.

The sources also say that Saleh did not die in an explosion but was shot by a sniper.

The wider Yemen conflict pits the Houthi-Saleh alliance against the Saudi-backed government of Hadi.

A senior official with Yemen's internationally-recognized government confirmed to The Associated Press that Saleh had been killed, sending video purportedly showing Saleh's body being carried away by a group of armed men chanting, "Allahu akbar".

Former Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh officially broke with his Houthi militia allies, calling on his supporters to rise up against them across the country.

"I call on our brothers in neighbouring countries... to stop their aggression and lift the blockade... and we will turn the page", he said in a televised speech.

Fahim reported from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

But even without Mr Saleh's loyalists, the rebels remain a powerful force.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) dismissed claims that Yemen's Houthi rebels fired a missile towards a nuclear plant in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, state news agency WAM reported.

The stalemated war has killed more than 10,000 civilians and displaced 3 million.

The former president of Yemen and a main player in its long-running civil war has been killed after an enemy faction attacked his house, according to reports.

Saudi Arabia views the Houthis as an Iranian proxy located just next door.
