Creek Fire forces mandatory evacuations affecting 100000 people

By 6:20 a.m. local time, the fast-moving brush fire, fueled by 25 miles per hour winds, was burning about 50 acres in western Los Angeles, prompting residents of several posh neighborhoods to evacuate their homes, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The blaze was moving up a hill on the east side of the 405 freeway, near the Getty Center, officials said. Along with the lack of much-needed rain, the Santa Ana winds have made it very hard to contain and put out the fires.

Another fire that broke out in Ventura on Monday is still raging, and has already burned 65,000 acres, according to Cal Fire.

Citywide, about 600 officers were assigned to coordinate security and various "firefighting events, " Beck said.

L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti declared a local emergency in response to the Creek Fire.

The fire started near a creek and is threatening homes along the 210 freeway.

More than 1,000 firefighters are trying to battle the blaze but can not enter the area "due to the intensity of the fire", county officials said.

Shortly after 6 a.m., mandatory evacuations were ordered for Moraga Drive, Linda Flora Drive, and Casiano Road, down to Bellagio Road, according to the LAFD. Six fixed-wing aircraft and a number of helicopters were deployed to the scene, Garcetti said.

It has been reported that Rupert Murdoch's Bel Air estate is in the line of fire.

The weather conditions were impeding efforts to contain and extinguish the out-of-control blaze, as strong, gusty winds fueled the "extreme" fire behavior, according to the inciweb incident information website.

Evacuation centers are open at the Sylmar Recreation Center, located at 13109 Borden Avenue.

If the fire crosses the 405 freeway, it will hit one of the highest priced residential areas of Brentwood, she added. The closure was between the 101 Freeway to the north and the 10 Freeway to the south.

About 9 a.m., the southbound freeway was reopened, but some onramps and offramps remained closed in the area, as was a section of Mulholland Drive, the CHP reported.
