Google To Open Physical Stores In India To Push Pixel Sales

Google is planning to bring brick-and-mortar stores to one of the biggest smartphone markets in the world.

According to a report, Google India is planning to open more brick-and-mortar stores in the country to expand their offline sales and business growth. According to ET, two "prominent" malls in India have received requests to open Google retail space. The launch did not get the excitement that Google had anticipated however, but hopefully, this time around, we should expect Google's second coming to be a more popular affair. Despite a per capita income that is considered to be very low, Google has been encouraged by the strong response to the Pixel 2 handsets at pop-up stores that the company put up in the country.

In addition to opening pop-up locations in Los Angeles and NY for the 2017 Made by Google lineup, the company opened a series of similar stores in India. "They got a flavour of how physical stores are also important because you can't explain numerous features online". One executive at a mall claims that the pop-ups have imparted on Google how retail is "important because you can't explain numerous features online".

Google will use the stores to sell other products as well, said one of the persons cited above.

Retail stores are the ideal platform for increasing awareness of Google's hardware ecosystem.
Some of the other companies, like Apple and Samsung have taken the franchisee route, where the companies offer a standardized design and layout for the stores and they can even choose different parties in various cities to open the outlets.

For those unaware, this is not the first time Google is setting up a physical store in India. Apple, however, has been lobbying hard in India for single-brand retail licence to be able to open its own stores.

Apple is seeking a single-brand licence to open own stores in India and has sought concessions including duty exemption on manufacturing and servicing, components, capital equipment and consumables for 15 years. Back in 2013, Google had tied up with Spice Group for "AndroidLand" outlets, which was dedicated to Android smartphones from multiple brands.
