Padmavati Row: Parliamentary Panel Calls Sanjay Leela Bhansali, CBFC Chief Prasoon Joshi

A few celebrities have come out in the open to lend their support to Bhansali's film.

Bhansali faced irked members of the panel on information technology, who wanted to know why he held a special screening for select media personnel when the film is yet to be cleared by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

Apart from Advani, the 30-member standing committee on IT, headed by BJP MP Anurag Thakur, comprises members of both Houses, including Congress MP Raj Babbar and BJP MPs Paresh Rawal and Hema Malini among others. The CBFC chief appeared before the petition's panel that also took up the film for discussion and its chair C P Joshi, who is also from BJP, is understood to have noted that Bhansali had failed to take cognisance of the faith and reverence in the figure of Padmavati.

Echoing Mr Patekar, veteran actor Rishi Kapoor spoke to news agency IANS and said, "I feel that (the release of) films in this democracy should not be curbed". Can a film be released overseas before it is cleared for screening in India?

CBFC chief Prasoon Joshi also informed the panel that an expert panel has been set up to scrutinise the film's content before it is given a certification.

It also has a subtle message of how the film might take some time to get out of murky waters and see the light of day, considering that those responsible for maintaining law and order in the country are not as active as they ideally should have been to avert this crisis. "The members have also chose to call the producers of the movie". "We will respect the decision that CBFC takes as it is a government body". Bhansali has agreed on numerous occasions that his film is a work of fiction and is based on the epic poem, Padmavat, written by Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi in 1540. The secretary to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, too, has deposed before us. The actor had turned to every camera frame and repeated that there's no scene between Deepika and Ranveer Singh in the film, on the request of SLB.
