Dem commissioner joins energy regulator Senate panel advances controversial environmental nominee GOP bets that tax bill will unlock corporate cash overseas MORE (D-Del.) asked during her confirmation hearing. It is clear that she has the full confidence of the President and former DHS Secretary John Kelly, who is now the White House chief of staff.

Senate Homeland Security Chairman Ron Johnson, R-Wis., said Nielsen brings valuable, practical experience to DHS.

"It has been an honor to serve as the Department's Acting Secretary, and I look forward to working alongside Ms. Nielsen as her deputy as we continue to carry out the DHS mission of safeguarding the American people, our homeland, and our values", she said in a statement.

Nielsen, 45, developed a reputation for fierce devotion to Kelly as his deputy at the White House, and before that as his chief of staff at the Department of Homeland Security, which he ran from January until July. Bush. endorsed Nielsen's nomination.

Several Democrats expressed concerns over Nielsen's close relationship with the White House and potential political interference from the administration.

As DHS secretary, Nielsen will head an agency charged with protecting America's borders, squashing cybersecurity threats and leading the response to natural disasters.

Despite increasing prominence in the national conversation, cybersecurity was a secondary topic during Nielsen's confirmation hearing.

Her position will also drop her into the middle of multiple immigration fights, as senators debate how to address the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

"Ms. Nielsen has been engaged in counterterrorism, all-hazard risk mitigation, critical infrastructure protection, and response policy from the earliest days of what we now know as homeland security", the former officials wrote in a letter to the Senate Homeland Security Committee.

Sen. Kamala Harris (D., Calif.) criticized Nielsen for playing a role in the development of Trump's travel ban and a failure to acknowledge how humans contribute to climate change, according to the AP.
