Weather: Snow and ice warning for Northern Ireland

In London the predictions are that there will be two inches of snow at around 6pm on Monday.

The Met Office said "predominantly colder periods" are expected through the second half of December until after Christmas, with snow in the Midlands and North.

Chief Forecaster's assessment adds that "a band of rain, heavy at times, is expected to move eastwards over the UK".

"There will be devastating winds in some parts".

Conditions will start to turn wet and blustery, especially across the north and north west of the United Kingdom, before gales hit on Thursday.

STORM CAROLINE is set to bring heavy gales, snow, and ice to Ireland in the coming hours as the extreme weather conditions make their way from the United Kingdom to Irish shores.

Tomorrow the Yellow weather warning for snow and ice is valid from 00.05 on Friday to 18.00 on Saturday.

"Storm Caroline is well on its way across northern parts of the U.K.", Met Office meteorologist John West said.

'Overnight, the main feature will be the increase in wind as Caroline starts to come in towards the end of the night.

"At the moment we have a yellow weather warning in place, but it could be upgraded to amber".

An North Sea oil rig, off the north-east coast of Scotland, is being partially evacuated over fears extreme waves caused by Caroline could endanger workers.

CNR International said it would remove all of the 159 staff on Ninian South, about 240 miles from Aberdeen, from the structure as a precaution.

During Thursday afternoon, a mixture of sleet and snow showers will work their way across the whole of Britain, with the potential for blizzard conditions in Scotland.

The Met Office has also issued a Yellow National Severe Weather Warning for snow and ice for much of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and parts of northern and western England for Friday - 1-3 inches of snow is likely fairly widely, with 4 to 8 inches in more northern areas.
