A USA customs computer snafu caused major airport delays

Immigration desk computers at various airports went down for about two hours on Monday, causing long lines for travelers entering the United States after year-end holidays, according to Customs and Border Protection and posts on social media.

The outage affected airports including JFK, San Francisco and Denver, as global travelers arrived from holiday travels on New Year's Day.

Kennedy Airport and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport also acknowledged there could be passenger delays.

Denver International Airport reported the "brief customs processing issue has been resolved".

DFW travelers told NBC5 they had very little information about what was happening and hundreds of people backed up in line while the computer systems were down. It said Monday night that all airports were back on line. Agents were still able to process passengers using an alternative system, albeit at a much slower rate. "Travelers at some ports of entry experienced longer than usual wait times as CBP officers processed travelers as quickly as possible while maintaining the highest levels of security", it said in a statement.

During the outage, "alternative procedures" were used to process worldwide passengers, according to the agency.
