Apple Will Replace iPhone Batteries Despite Diagnostic Test Results

Apple Will Replace iPhone Batteries Despite Diagnostic Test Results

Apple is offering discounted battery replacements for iPhone 6 and later models, after admitting to slowing down older iPhone models due to battery life issues with new software. As part of that apology, Apple will make it easier to tell if your battery is slowing down your phone - and cheaper to replace the battery if it's causing problems. That said, older phones' batteries may still be dying, because they've run out of full recharge cycles. Supplies may be limited at first. If the battery was at 80 percent or more of originally stated performance, "Apple could refuse the replacement, even if the customer required it".

Apple is also working on iOS updates with iOS 11.2.5 in beta testing, Forbes reported. Apple has reduced the price of all the out-of-warranty iPhone battery replacements.

According to a leaked memo obtained by iGeneration - and independently confirmed by MacRumors with Apple itself - the company is telling Apple Stores to offer the $29 replacement batteries even if a customer's phone passes the battery capacity test with flying colors.

Ben Bajarin, an analyst with Creative Strategies, said Apple found itself in a tough spot by having to explain what it did to cope with the reality that all lithium ion batteries degrade over time. The fund owned 6,616 shares of the iPhone maker's stock after selling 1,579 shares during the quarter. The iPhone 7 hit in September 2016.

But for Apple's $29 battery replacement mea culpa, Apple has reportedly chose to waive those test results. There's been a big push in the "right to repair" movement, with numerous lawsuits in progress from groups around the world that would like the right to fix a device that they own rather than being reliant on the company that produced the item.

By failing to properly disclose at the time that the company had breached an implied contract with consumers, one of the suits says, by "purposefully slowing down older iPhone models when new models came out and by failing to properly disclose that at the time the parties entered into an agreement". Several lawsuits have been filed seeking class action status on behalf of all iPhone owners, and are likely to be consolidated into a single case if judges allow them to proceed.
