Burmese army admits to killing Rohingya

The military said in a statement on the commander in chief's Facebook page that the attackers were from the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army, the militant group blamed for attacks on police posts in August that prompted the crackdown that left thousands of Rohingya dead and more than 650,000 displaced.

Although the Rohingya consider themselves an ethnic minority of Myanmar, numerous Buddhist majority consider them illegal foreigners from Bangladesh.

Until now, however, security forces have denied any accusations of guilt.

The military's statement on Wednesday said due to ongoing attacks, security forces deemed it impossible to bring the 10 men to the police station and decided instead to execute the suspects at the village cemetery on the morning after their capture.

The military announced on Dec.18 that a mass grave containing 10 bodies had been found at the coastal village of Inn Din, about 50 km north of the state capital Sittwe.

The military announced on December 18 that a mass grave containing 10 bodies had been found at the coastal village of Inn Din, about 50 km (30 miles) north of the state capital Sittwe.

On Wednesday, it admitted that ethnic Rakhine villagers and security forces killed the 10 Royingya Muslims in the village on September 2 previous year.

Late a year ago a Doctors Without Borders report said that at least 6,700 Rohingya were killed in the first month alone. They are widely called "Bengalis" and are accused of migrating illegally from Bangladesh.

The Rohingya people have been previously targeted during 1999 and 2012, and the Karenni people suffered a similar fate when their villages were burned and they faced massive killings that forced them to flee to Thailand.

Angry ethnic Rakhine Buddhist villagers, who had lost relatives in militant attacks, wanted to kill the captives, and stabbed them after forcing them into a grave on the outskirts of the village.

"Villagers involved and security personnel who broke the Rules of Engagement will be taken action in accordance with the law", it added.

The military statement claimed the killing of U Maung Ni by the terrorists and the continuing threat to ethnic people bred retaliatory attitudes, which eventually led the killings.

Four members of the security forces also opened fire.

"This grisly admission is a sharp departure from the army's policy of blanket denial of any wrongdoing", James Gomez, Amnesty International's regional director for Southeast Asia and the Pacific, told RFA.
