HTC Unveils New Higher-Resolution Vive Pro VR Headset, Wireless Adapter

HTC Unveils New Higher-Resolution Vive Pro VR Headset, Wireless Adapter

In addition, HTC showed off the Vive Wireless Adaptor, which can hook onto either the original or Vive Pro and wirelessly connect to a nearby PC.

No release date or price has been given for the HTC Vive Pro, but we do know that the Vive Wireless Adaptor will arrive towards the latter half of 2018.

If the original Vive's boring-gray color did nothing for you, try this shiny shade of blue.

"There's a clear need in the VR market for a premium VR experience with high resolution display, integrated audio and the best components available today in a headset", said HTC's Daniel O'Brien, General Manager for Vive in the US.

If you want to experience VR untethered, HTC says that its newly unveiled Vive Wireless Adapter will work with both the Vive and Vive Pro.

We'll be going hands-on with the HTC Vive Pro shortly and will update you with our initial impressions soon.

The Vive Pro isn't meant to replace the existing HTC Vive, which will remain on shelves.

HTC has also added dual microphones and dual front-facing cameras which are designed for developers to take advantage of.

The Pro's total resolution will be 2880x1600, almost a 78 percent increase over the current Vive's 2160×1200.

But for those interested in owning the next step, HTC hasn't committed to exact release dates - for the Vive Pro, or for a proper successor to the now available Vive. Instead, users will see "fully immersive interactive previews".

This resolution enhances immersion for VR enthusiasts, and the improved clarity means text, graphics and overall experience all come into sharper view. The full Vive Pro kit with 2.0 tracking is said to ship in the Summer time frame.

The update is called Viveport VR, and it'll put users in a glossy, futuristic environment from where they can access all of Viveport's content, making it easier to discover new videogames and apps.

Also announced is an upgrade to Vive Video, which makes changes in an attempt to improve discovery and acquisition of VR-based experiences. Available in the second half of 2018, the adaptor features Intel's WiGig technology and operates in the interference-free 60Ghz band.

The Vive Pro will be backwards compatible with existing Vive applications as well as the company's room-scale trackers.
