Letterman Nabs Obama as First Guest for New Netflix Show

David Letterman's first guest on his new Netflix talk show really needs no introduction.

Former President Barack Obama is set to be late-night legend David Letterman's first guest on his new Netflix series next week, marking 44's return to major talk show scene.

Actor George Clooney, Nobel peace laureate Malala Yousafzai, actress Tina Fey, shock jock Howard Stern and rap superstar Jay-Z complete the lineup.

Netflix has been spending heavily to produce and acquire content as it races to dominate streaming television and beat competition from traditional media and other streaming players such as Hulu and Amazon.com Inc.'s Prime Video. Obama's episode - which marks the former Commander in Chief's first talk-show appearance since leaving office - will be released on January 12; subsequent episodes will follow monthly. It marks Letterman's first TV gig since he signed off of "The Late Show" in 2015.

Produced by RadicalMedia and Letterman's Worldwide Pants Incorporated, for Netflix, each one-hour episode is centered around one guest. The six-episode show features Letterman extensively interviewing one person inside and outside of a studio setting.

Taking his usual late night hijinks in a more serious direction seems like a natural progression in Letterman's semi-retirement, as the 70-year-old comedian's material has grown more political and socially conscious in later years. In addition, Letterman will participate in field segments to dig deeper on a specific topic related to the guest featured in the episode.

This is the first time Letterman has led a series in over two years.
