Manhunt for pair charged in girl's death underway

Federal authorities are joining police in southern MI in the search for a couple after a 4-year-old girl was found dead New Year's Day with "severe burns".

Michigan State Police told WWJ U.S. Marshals located 24-year-old Candice Diaz and 28-year-old Brad Fields on the run near the Georgia-Florida line.

Diaz's daughter, Gabrielle Barrett, died after being found with severe burns New Year's Day in a mobile home in Sumpter Township.

Investigators told WDIV in Detroit that the home where the girl lived with Diaz and Fields was full of animal waste, and that guns and drugs were found on the premises. She was rushed to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, where she was pronounced dead.

The death was ruled a homicide two days later by the Washtenaw County Medical Examiner, according to police, with evidence of multiple traumatic injuries indicating child abuse.

MI police charged Candice Diaz and Brad Fields in the death of Diaz's four-year-old daughter.

The couple face charges of felony murder, second-degree murder, first-degree child abuse and torture in the death of Gabby Barrett. It's unclear whether Fields is the child's father. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office later issued a warrant for the arrest of Diaz and Fields, according to police.

On May 20, 2016, officers stormed the house after a report of a barricaded gunman after a domestic assault.

According to neighbors, Child Protective Services had been to the home several times over the years, but the children were never taken from the home.

He was later arrested on domestic violence charges. WDIV reported that Diaz was booked on weapons charges at that time.
