Pakistan felt betrayed over United States statement: Army chief

Pakistan felt betrayed over United States statement: Army chief

Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Pakistan has assisted the U.S. in its fight in the war on terrorism, providing the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) with supply routes into landlocked Afghanistan after the USA invasion, Bloomberg reports.

"Pakistan is fully aware of USA concerns on activities of Afghan nationals in Pakistan and we are already undertaking multiple actions through Operation Raddul Fasaad to deny any residual capacity to terrorists of all hue and colour for which return of Afghan refugees is an essential prerequisite", Gen Bajwa was quoted as having told Gen Votel.

In the weeks since the Trump administration withheld almost $1 billion in security aid for Pakistan, Washington and Islamabad officials have been working to patch things up and avert a unsafe deterioration in their often troubled relations.

Khan said that Trump scapegoated Pakistan for the US -led coalition's failure to defeat the Taliban and bring peace to Afghanistan, and that "it was very insulting of him".

A senior Trump administration official said last week that the United States was already examining ways to mitigate any Pakistani retaliation as it piles pressure on Islamabad to crack down on militants.

The Pakistani assertion that Votel said no unilateral action inside Pakistan was being considered may have referred to the possibility of cross-border United States drone strikes and other military missions targeting Taliban and other militant figures outside the border area.

The comment comes after President Donald Trump's administration withheld nearly $2 billion in security aid from Pakistan for allegedly failing to take "decisive action" against Taliban militants targeting United States personnel in neighboring Afghanistan, according to the Associated Press.

Pakistan later responded to Trump's allegations by convening a National Security Committee meeting, attended by Bajwa and Pakistan's Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

It's still not clear what kind of government Khan envisions for Pakistan.

Khan and his party spearheaded street protests and a subsequent legal battle that ousted Pakistan's thrice-elected prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, from office last July on corruption charges. While he praises liberals outside Pakistan as anti-war and committed to humanitarian values and freedom of speech, he rails against Pakistani liberals, chastising them for supporting the military operations in the tribal regions. Haq remains a close ally of Afghanistan's Taliban. The seminaries are often charged with promoting sectarianism.

He said he wants madressah graduates to have skills that will allow them to find jobs across all sectors.
