President Trump talks directly to Rural America at AFBF Convention

With an eye toward the mid-term congressional elections in November, Trump warned that Democrats would seek to reverse the newly enacted tax cuts and the reduction in regulations that his administration was carrying out.

But the speech, the first by a sitting president to the convention of one of America's biggest agriculture industry groups in more than 25 years, touched only briefly on some of the major issues facing farmers today, such as trade, deregulation and labor issues.

Trump said farmers had suffered the "relentless intrusion from the army of regulators" for years, while highlighting his achievements in first year in office.

The crowd applauds as President Donald Trump speaks at the 99th annual convention of the American Farm Bureau Federation in Nashville, Tenn., on January 8, 2018.

The respective decree builds on the development of rural infrastructure, broadens the access of rural areas to broadband internet, improves the professional training of farmers, stimulates the introduction of innovations in the agriculture sector.

"From now on, most family farms and small-business owners will be spared ... of the deeply unfair estate tax, known as the death tax-so you can keep your farms in the family", Trump said, to raucous applause.

Some versions of the tax cut and reform bill eliminated the estate tax completely, but the final bill did not.

The goal of the visit was to promote his administration's five-point plan to turnaround struggling rural communities.

Rural Americans voted overwhelmingly for Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

"On NAFTA, I am working very hard to get a better deal for our country and for our farmers, for our manufacturers".

Rep. Desjarlais (TN-04) thanked the President "for lifting federal regulations harming farmers, ranchers and rural communities".

Trump said he is working with Congress and Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts to pass the expiring farm bill on time, adding he supports a bill that includes crop insurance.

The NAACP is urging people to wear white and hold anti-Trump signs on Monday for President Donald Trump's visit to Atlanta. "We ditched the rule", he said, to the members of the organization which led the charge to "Ditch the Rule" when it came out in 2015.

He also got standing ovations when he talked about his administration's ongoing effort to replace the Obama-era "waters of the United States" (WOTUS) rule and when he called for passing a new farm bill "on time so it delivers for all of you".

"Trade will be on the mind of folks in the room on Monday, and I think you'll hear the President touch upon that", a senior administration official said.

In the last weeks of 2017 alone, the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Develop announced investments of over $74.7 million that will bring over 2,014 new jobs to rural Tennessee communities.
