Serena Williams opens up about childbirth complications on cover of Vogue

Serena Williams opens up about childbirth complications on cover of Vogue

The piece details Williams' recovery from her emergency C-section, and complications caused by her previous struggles with blood clots: feeling short of breath, and recognising the potential impact of skipping her usual anticoagulants due to the surgery, Williams advised hospital staff she needed a CT scan, ASAP.

Having experienced the symptoms before, she assumed she was having a pulmonary embolism and demanded the medical team give her a scan and a blood thinner medication.

"I was like, a Doppler?"

The ultrasound revealed nothing, and according to Vogue, Williams reiterated: "I told you, I need a CT scan and a heparin drip". They finally did the CT, and sure enough, there were several blood clots in her lungs. "Or I'll get angry about the crying, then sad about being angry, and then guilty, like, 'Why do I feel so sad when I have a attractive baby?' The emotions are insane", she explained. Doctors then found a hematoma flooding her abdomen - caused by a chain reaction from her blood thinners that led to hemorrhaging at her C-section wound.

After the ordeal, Williams was unable to get out of bed for six weeks.

Serena Williams suffered from a series of scary complications following her daughter Alexis' arrival in September. Williams has told the world repeatedly that she plays to win and it shows.

"I was happy to change diapers", Ohanian, who married Williams in November, told Vogue, adding that the hardest part was "not being able to help". I guess that's just who I am. "No one talks about the low moments-the pressure you feel, the incredible letdown every time you hear the baby cry", she said.

"I've broken down I don't know how many times".

Williams is on the mend and played in her first match since giving birth December 30.

Today, Williams is raising her daughter and has made a return to the tennis court. "If there's no clear number one, it's like, yeah, I can get my spot back", she asserts.

"Knowing I've got this lovely baby to go home to makes me feel like I don't have to play another match", she explained. "I want to teach her that there are no limits".

Williams also touched on experiencing intense feelings postpartum, telling the magazine that "sometimes I get really down and feel like, 'Man, I can't do this'".
