Thousands of homes and firms blacked out as Storm Eleanor strikes

A yellow weather warning is in place for much of the country from Tuesday, with Eleanor set to become the first named storm of the year.

It said public transport may be disrupted or cancelled, power cuts may occur and injuries from flying debris are possible.

Met Eireann advises: "Strong to gale force and blustery southwest winds will develop later this afternoon over Munster and Leinster, veering westerly this evening, associated with storm Eleanor, giving some damaging gusts and also high seas on Atlantic coasts".

"With Storm Dylan continuing to disrupt the nation, we are offering just evens for the wind speed to reach as high as 100mph in mainland United Kingdom this week, while we are not ruling snowfall in London", added Hill.

In the capital, winds are likely to rise as high as 45mph, bringing torrential rain overnight. Indeed, several people took to Twitter to share videos and pictures of flooding in and around the Galway area.

The Environment Agency is expecting to issue flood alerts too, ahead of those high spring tides.

"If you're travelling, please check your route before setting off and don't drive through flood water". "It could remain more unsettled in the south".

You'll be scrambling for your anoraks come Wednesday with torrential downpours likely to follow the windy start to the first week of 2018.

"Drivers will need to take extra care and expect delays, even on motorways".
