Twitter won't block world leaders, citing need for discourse

On Tuesday night, Trump used Twitter to taunt North Korea about the nuclear capabilities of the U.S.in response to recent comments from its leader Kim Jong Un.

In a blog post, the company said it sees itself as a platform for public conversation where elected leaders play a key role. While Trump's behavior on Twitter can be described as anything from laughable to frightening, it's not going to be stopping anytime soon.

During his first year in office, President Trump has publicly questioned America's role in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, withdrew from the Paris global climate accord, proposed a significant cut to the budget for diplomatic personnel and foreign assistance and said that he is "the only one that matters" in terms of America's foreign policy.

"Blocking a world leader from Twitter or removing their controversial Tweets, would hide important information people should be able to see and debate", the company's statement said.

Many of people have flagged this and other crazed tweets by Trump over the past year, pointing out his hate speech and threats as grounds for suspending the president's Twitter account.

On Tuesday, the US president Tweeted about his "nuclear button", saying his is "a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!"

At least when it comes to Twitter, the company is saying it will hold Trump, other world leaders, their militaries and governments to a different standard, allowing them to effectively do as they please on the service. Protesters even gathered outside Twitter's headquarters in San Francisco earlier this week to call on CEO Jack Dorsey to delete Trump's account.

The statement does not name Trump or state any new policy, but instead offers a defense of the company's current practice, which takes into account whether a tweet that might otherwise violate the company's rules is "newsworthy" or in the "public interest".

Dorsey also said that an article in Slate this week, headlined "Let Trump Tweet", by senior technology writer Will Oremus, "captures some of the issues".

Trump critics have pointed out many instances where it seems as though the president has violated Twitter's terms of service with his messages. Now, he's using the social media platform to threaten nuclear war.

"We review tweets by leaders within the political context that defines them, and enforce our rules accordingly", the post said.

"No one person's account drives Twitter's growth, or influences these decisions", it added.

Finally, while it's doubtful that taking away Trump's Twitter would make us much safer, it would nearly certainly make Trump himself safer-in his office, that is.
